Vintage Lockheed C-141 Starlifter Stretch Program Original Press Photo RK 9385-1
Original vintage black-and-white Lockheed-Georgia Company press photograph documenting the C-141 Starlifter fuselage lengthening, or “stretch,” modification program.
The dramatic overhead image shows a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter undergoing modification with sections of the fuselage separated for installation of two plugs. According to the original Lockheed press information attached to the reverse, a 160-inch plug was installed forward of the wing and a 120-inch plug aft of the wing, increasing the aircraft’s length by 23.3 feet and providing an estimated 35% increase in productivity.
The reverse retains the original Lockheed-Georgia Company Newsbureau caption sheet identifying the photograph as Photo No. RK 9385-1. The caption discusses the C-141 stretch program, Lockheed’s earlier experience modifying C-130 Hercules aircraft, and the potential increased capability for the Military Airlift Command fleet.
Vintage condition with age-related handling and storage wear. Reverse has original/period labels, handwritten markings, tape and tape residue from the attached caption sheet. These features have been left intact as part of the photograph’s provenance and history. This item is from the estate of noted scientific journalist A.R. Hogan, who worked with NASA during the 1980-2000s.
