Condition:No major tears or stainsUp for sale is a stunning, statement-sized vintage Cambodian temple rubbing capturing an iconic bas-relief from the historic galleries of Angkor Wat. Measuring an impressive 43" x 44", this large-format artwork serves as an incredible mid-century cultural artifact and a dramatic focal point for any global, bohemian, or mid-century modern interior design. This piece depicts King Suryavarman II (the 12th-century builder of Angkor Wat) seated majestically on his royal throne. Because of the expansive, near-square scale of this specific rubbing, it beautifully captures the grand scale of the royal court procession. The king is surrounded by an intricate, multi-tiered display of ceremonial parasols, grand fans, and royal attendants. These rubbings were created by hand by placing delicate, fibrous rice paper over the ancient stone carvings and carefully applying charcoal or ink to transfer the exact texture of the 12th-century reliefs. Because the Cambodian government officially banned direct temple rubbings to protect and preserve the delicate ancient stonework, authentic vintage pieces of this scale have become highly collectible and increasingly rare. The rubbing features gorgeous, rich black pigment contrasts against the cream tones of the handmade paper, showcasing beautiful natural fibers throughout. This piece is currently unframed and will look magnificent when floated on a mat board under glass to emphasize its natural, deckled edges.Has the Angkor Wat stamp on the back. Will be shipped in a cardboard tube.See photos.
