Vintage Lancaster & Sandland Hand Painted Highwayman Toby Mug Made in EnglandThe mug measures approximately 5 1/4" high, 5 1/2" wide and 4 1/2" in diameter. It's in very nice condition without cracks or chips. There is some crazing.
The Toby Jug was also called a Fillpotand both names were probably derived from Toby Philpot, the drunken character in the 18th Century song "Little Brown Jug," that was popular in England and America. Lancaster & Sandland made Toby mugs from 1944 - 1968. They were makers of earthenware at the Dresden works at an area named Tinkersclough, in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.
