Vintage Japanese Woodblock Print on handmade Washi paper after Kitagawa Utamaro. Features authentic hand-printed relief impression with strong ink absorption and clear publisher mark. Framed under PlexiglasUp for sale is an authentic, hand-printed vintage Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print rendered on textured washi paper. This piece is a mid-to-late 20th-century artisan edition printed after the famed late-18th-century master Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806).
The classic drama depicts the tragic literary lovers Umegawa and Chūbei walking together through a rainstorm. Chūbei shelters them beneath a wide blue oil-paper umbrella while the courtesan Umegawa adjusts her sash beneath her black veil. A round inset vignette in the upper corner portrays a coastal harbor scene echoing motifs from the Eight Meetings series.
The print bears the block signature Utamaro hitsu alongside publisher/censor marks in the lower right corner. Close-up examination confirms solid ink relief line work absorbed directly into genuine organic handmade paper fibers (no modern halftone print dots).
