Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size reproduction of the print created in 1832-33 by the renowned artist of the Edo period, Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige (1797-1858),
The print is called "Night View of Matsuchiyama and the San'ya Canal" (Matsuchiyama San'yabori yakei), from the series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" (Meisho Edo hyakkei) no. 34 from the series.
"One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" is a series of 119 ukiyo-e prints begun and largely completed by the Japanese artist Hiroshige (1797–1858), of Edo, the historical name for Tokyo. The prints were first published in serialized form in 1856–59, with Hiroshige II completing the series after Hiroshige's death. It was tremendously popular and much reprinted.
The location of this composition is near the Sanya Canal - seen in the distance spanned by the Imado Bridge and flanked by the glowing lights of the Yumeiro restaurant on the right and the Takeya restaurant on the left. The dark hill beyond is the Matsuchiyama, a landmark en route to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. In the foreground, a geisha walks in profile along the eastern shore of the Sumida River, following a lantern guiding the way. She is in Mukojima, a neighborhood associated with its cherry trees. The tree to the right is likely a cherry, just past the blooming season
