Vintage Japanese Kamakura Bori Carved Lacquer Jubako Tiered Box Chrysanthemum: $142.50
This beautiful Vintage Japanese Kamakura Bori Carved Lacquer Jubako Tiered Box is from my mother's estate. My parents lived in Tokyo from 1959-2002 and acquired many interesting items and antiques during that time. This item was either gifted to my parents or they purchased it in the 70s or 80s to give as a gift, but it remained unused and in storage for decades until recently discovered in one of their many antique tansu (chests). Please read on for an AI generated description/value based on the specs/dimensions and photos that I uploaded. Item Description Up for consideration is a vintage Japanese Kamakura-bori (鎌倉彫) carved lacquer tiered bento box (jubako / 重箱). The box features traditional hand-chiseled wood work with a rich reddish-brown lacquered finish and black interior compartments. Design & Craftsmanship: Carved with a traditional tsuchime (chiseled/honeycomb) textured background accented by relief-carved chrysanthemum (kiku) floral blossoms across the lid and stacked side panels. Structure: Three-tier stackable design topped with a fitted lid and elevated by small footed corner supports on the base tier. Smooth matte black lacquer interior finish.
Specifications & Condition: Style/Craft: Kamakura-bori Lacquerware | Japan Weight: 2 lbs 13 oz (1.28 kg) Condition: Pristine NOS (New Old Stock) condition. Unused in original fitted box. No chips, cracks, or wear to the lacquered surfaces.
Collector & Investment Value Estimated Market Value: $100.00 – $150.00+ Value Estimate Justification: Authentic Hand-Carved Technique: Kamakura-bori carving requires skilled artisan craft, making carved wooden jubako significantly more valuable than smooth resin or plain lacquered alternatives. Pristine Unused Condition: Having the complete 3-tier set unused with zero lacquer loss or corner chipping commands top-tier pricing. Original Packaging: Retaining the original storage box adds provenance and attracts collectors looking for complete, presentation-ready Japanese folk art (Mingei).
