Hyōshigi produce a sharp, penetrating sound when struck together. They have a long history in Japanese culture and were traditionally used by night watchmen during yomawari neighborhood patrols to remind residents to guard against fire. They are also associated with sumo tournaments, kabuki and bunraku theater, festivals, kamishibai storytelling, and ceremonial announcements.
The substantial 36-inch cord allowed the clappers to be worn around the neck or carried conveniently while making patrol rounds. The warm natural wood, softened edges, and light surface wear give this pair an appealing vintage character.
