The Tang Stamp:
The blade features the scarcer and highly sought-after ◇ R ◇ (Diamond-R-Diamond) trademark stamp above the J. Russell & Co. name. This is a much tougher variant to track down than the standard arrow-through-R mark, making it an excellent addition to any specialized tang stamp display.
Materials & Construction:
• Scales: Genuine, authentic Mother-of-Pearl handles boasting a deep, fiery iridescence that catches the light beautifully from every angle.
• Shield: A flush, unengraved nickel-silver or silver rectangular shield inlay on the display scale.
• Liners & Bolster: Solid brass liners with a single, clean nickel-silver bolster.
• Blade Details: Single carbon steel blade featuring an elegant, historical long-pull groove instead of a standard nail nick.
Condition Details:
• Mechanics: Absolutely exceptional. The blade snaps back incredibly strong with a fierce, crisp open and close walk-and-talk. The backspring is perfectly flush and tight in both positions. No wobble, no lazy movement.
• Handles: The pearl scales are tight to the liners with no long structural hairline cracks or end-to-end splits. There is a typical, localized antique pin flake/chip out of the nacre directly under the center scale rivet (clearly highlighted in the close-up photo). It remains completely stable.
• Steel: Pristine structural shape with a full profile. Shows natural, light carbon spotting and an authentic historical patina on the tang and spine—left unpolished to preserve its vintage integrity.
