Vintage Collection of 9 Indian Hand-Carved Folk Art Figures & Animals
Offered is a collection of nine hand-carved and hand-painted wooden figures and animals from India. The group includes villagers, soldiers or guards, a Hindu devotee with Vaishnava forehead markings, and domestic animals.
The figures are carved from lightweight wood with a traditional white gesso-like preparation beneath the paint. Several figures were constructed from multiple carved pieces with attached arms, typical of handmade Indian folk carvings.
Based on construction and style, they are believed to date from approximately the mid-20th century (circa 1930–1960). They may originate from Andhra Pradesh in the Kondapalli tradition or another South Indian or Rajasthani folk carving tradition. They are offered as a collectible group, and I have not attempted a definitive regional attribution.
