Likely 1960s
Striking vintage ceramic wall plaque featuring a highly stylized horse rendered in turquoise, green, cream, and black against a matte dark background.
The horse is built from bold, irregular blocks of color outlined in a lighter tone, giving the piece a distinctly mid-century modern / modernist appearance. The plaque itself has an unusual asymmetrical organic form rather than a conventional circular plate, adding to its sculptural quality.
Measures approximately 9.5\" x 10.5\".
The reverse has an integral raised foot and two pierced hanging holes with an older cord, indicating that the piece was designed specifically as wall decoration.
The plaque is unmarked.
I purchased this piece in Budapest from a dealer specializing in Hungarian mid-century furniture, ceramics, and decorative objects.
Based on comparison with documented Hungarian ceramics from the 1950s–70s, including asymmetrical animal plaques associated with the Bodrogkeresztúr ceramic works, the piece appears stylistically consistent with Hungarian postwar decorative pottery of that period. I have not located this exact design in a documented catalog, however, so Bodrogkeresztúr should be considered a possible attribution rather than a confirmed maker.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs observed. Minor surface wear consistent with age and display. Please review all photos carefully for exact condition.
