VintageHopi Pueblo American Indian Polychrome Pottery Jar, Signed Anita Polacca, Circa 1960\'s
Thistraditional Hopi jar was made by Anita Polacca from Sichomovi Village in Arizona,located on the 1st Mesa between Walpi and Hano, the TewaVillage, which was the home of the famous potter, Nampeyo.
The jar ishand-coiled and outdoor fired as evidenced by the fire clouds orsmudging. The carefully applied red and black decoration is clearlyinfluenced by Tewa potters and the Nampeyo Family. Some of thefamiliar motifs include a stylized bird\'s head, a clown face,polished red motifs, and the sponged area. There is a prominent\"Spirit Break\" in the top framing line. The base is signed,Anita Polacca and there are some dealer\'s pencilled notations whichinclude the date 1972 and a price of $30.
AnitaPolacca is known to have been actively making pottery from 1940 (somesources say, 1932) to 1985. Her year of birth is unrecorded. Her motherwas Violet Huma (1910-85), also a noted Hopi potter.
Dimensions: 5-5/8\" maximum diameter, 4\" top opening diameter, 3-3/4\"tall, 1-3/4\" base diameter
Condition: Excellent. No cracks, chips or repairs. There are some fire cloudsor smudging from outdoor firing. There is some minor wear primarilyon the base (see photos).
