Striking hand-carved and hand-painted wooden mask depicting a fierce or wrathful guardian figure. The mask features dramatic bulging eyes, exposed teeth and fangs, a broad dotted nose, elaborate raised gold eyebrows and facial ornamentation, and a small carved animal/frog-like figure positioned prominently on the forehead.
The rich palette of deep red/burgundy, gold, yellow, black, green and cream gives the mask an especially dramatic appearance. Deep relief carving creates considerable dimension throughout the face, eyes, ears, mouth and decorative elements.
The reverse shows the hand-hollowed wooden construction with visible carving/tool marks and openings corresponding to the eyes and mouth. A simple hanging wire/cord is present for wall display.
