CONDITION:
Very good vintage condition with naturally aged patina, tarnish, surface scratches, small marks, and casting irregularities consistent with age and display. The wooden stand has scratches, finish wear, and old mounting holes. The statue rests on the separate wooden stand; no attaching hardware is included. No cracks or major structural damage observed. DESCRIPTION:
Large and exceptionally substantial vintage brass Laughing Buddha statue displayed on a separate carved hardwood stand.
The figure represents Budai, the jovial Chinese monk commonly known in the West as the Laughing Buddha and traditionally associated with happiness, contentment, abundance, and good fortune. He is depicted seated in a relaxed pose with one knee raised, flowing robes, an exposed belly, and a wonderfully expressive smiling face.
The statue is hollow cast but extremely heavy and well made, with a warm aged brass finish and visible hand-finishing marks. The separate dark hardwood stand has an attractive scalloped or lotus-style shape.
