The Stone Body is in excellent vintage condition. The stone has no cracks, major chips, or deep scratches. Natural inclusions, color shifts, and internal mineral lines are present, which are characteristic of genuine onyx. The hardware is comprised of two dual metal hinges that are currently functional and attached, but could benefit from a cleaning/delicate repair. Consistent with its vintage age, there is noticeable surface rust and oxidation on the metal hinges and small mounting screws (as pictured). The lid opens and closes.
This trinket box originates from Mexico in Mid-20th Century - Circa 1970s – 1980s. These hand-carved onyx objects, specifically in animal, botanical, and coastal motifs, grew immensely popular as travel souvenirs and bohemian home accents during the 1970s and 1980s. Most of these stylized geometric and organic stone pieces were hand-carved by regional artisans in Mexico, where vast deposits of beautifully banded calcite onyx are mined.
