This hand carved cowboy is truly an incredible piece of vintage folk art. The artist has exaggerated his features while still preserving a sense of realism. The woodworking on display is only equaled by the paint work. Up close it is almost like looking into an oil painting. The artist has brilliantly captured the essence of the West and the working cowhand.
The piece stands 10" tall, and is 3" wide.
This piece is signed "CW #9" on the bottom of the boots. I think it was most likely carved by Clefloyd Wall from Fort Worth. He numbered all his works and was well into the 300s in 1985. I'm guessing this piece dates to the 1970s. There is another man from Fort Worth named CW Boultoun. He also carved similar cowboys, and even authored a pair of how-to books on the subject. However, this piece looks closer to Clefloyd's work to my untrained eye.
This cowboy had a repair done to his left boot long ago, although it isn't highly noticeable at all.
This piece would be a great addition to any carving collection. It would also make an outstanding piece of decor for a ranch, farmhouse, etc. It would make a great gift for any cowboy, or just somebody who appreciates the allure of the old West.
