Vintage Greek Byzantine Christ Pantocrator Icon Sifnos 16th C Style w/ Cert. For Sale

Vintage Greek Byzantine Christ Pantocrator Icon – Sifnos – Gold Ground on WoodBeautiful vintage Byzantine-style icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, presented on a substantial carved/routed wooden panel with a gold-colored background and intentionally aged, crackled surface. The original multilingual certificate remains attached to the reverse. It identifies the subject as:“Christ Pantocrator, Sifnos (16th c.)”The certificate states that the piece is a copy of an ancient Byzantine icon, selected from representative examples of classical Byzantine iconography and produced on canvas, wood, and a gold background. The 16th-century designation refers to the historic Byzantine icon/design being reproduced, not the age of this particular piece. The image depicts Christ Pantocrator holding the Gospel book and giving a blessing, with two angels appearing on either side. The icon features traditional Greek/Byzantine inscriptions and a richly detailed gold-ground composition. The wooden panel has a deeply recessed front surrounding the image and a rustic, heavily textured reverse. The original certificate remains attached to the back and appears to retain its original seal. A hanging cord is also attached.Based on its construction, materials, certificate, and overall appearance, this appears to be a vintage Greek Byzantine icon reproduction, likely dating to approximately the 1970s–1980s, although the exact maker and production date have not been confirmed.Condition:Vintage condition with extensive crackling/crazing and distressed areas throughout the image and gold ground. There are scratches, surface wear, small losses and age-related marks. Some of this appearance may be intentional antiquing from manufacture. The wooden panel also shows wear and surface variation. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.Details:* Subject: Christ Pantocrator* Byzantine / Greek Orthodox style* Based on a Sifnos 16th-century icon* Gold-ground composition* Canvas/image mounted on wood* Carved/routed wooden panel* Multilingual certificate attached to reverse* Original-style seal on certificate* Hanging cord* Vintage reproduction — not being represented as a 16th-century originalA very attractive decorative and devotional piece for a collection of Greek Orthodox, Byzantine, Christian religious art, icons, or ecclesiastical décor.
