Vintage French Face Powder Compact - Champlevé - C1930 For Sale

The case on offer is a little bit of a mystery. It is a quality object whose manufacturer paid close attention both in the engine turning of the brass elements but also for the champlevé floral decoration complete with its black and orange background. Despite the case not being marked it is clearly not of either US or UK manufacture because neither country had a tradition of high quality enamel work using champlevé for its vanity cases. It bears the characteristics of a European- designed case, either France or Germany or Austria. My instinct is to say France. In fact, the case may not have been designed as a powder compact because the cover is not secured by a latch or similar device. If it was used as a face powder container, as the swan\'s down puff suggests then powder would have leaked out. Regardless, this is a very attractive case that in its day would have been quite expensive to buy. The case is 5cm in diameter and 1.5cm high. It weighs 45gm. The seller is downsizing his extensive collection, having spent the last 30 years collecting, researching and posting on his blog on collectingvintagecompacts.blogspot.com. Priced to sell. Please offer with confidence.
