Up for sale is piece of vintage mid-century French-Canadian folk art from the world-famous woodcarving village of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. Beautifully whittled at the respected Atelier M. Guay, this figurine captures a local tradesman or painter outfitted in a peaked cap, buttoned shirt, and overalls. The figure displays incredible detail, holding a classic wide paintbrush and a heavy paint can in his right hand, while carrying a block tool in his left hand.
The carving technique is fantastic, featuring the distinct, sharp blocky plane cuts that define master-level Quebecois whittling. Left in a clean, unpainted natural finish, the wood has aged to a gorgeous light golden-honey color. An excellent addition to any collection focusing on Canadian heritage art, Marcel Guay workshop pieces, or traditional North American woodcarvings.
Cosmetically in excellent vintage condition. No chips, missing chunks, splits, or repairs to the fragile brush or base. The natural wood finish is uniformly clean, bright, and free of stains, ink marks, or discoloration. The underside ink stamp remains crisp and highly legible.
