Vintage Christian Ulbricht Holzkunst -27” Handcrafted German Soldier Nutcracker-West Germany
Offered is a wonderful, large Christian Ulbricht Holzkunst wooden nutcracker standing approximately 17 inches tall, featuring an elaborately dressed military guard /soldier with an impressive handcrafted and hand painted appearance.
The original makers mark is present on the underside of the wooden base and clearly reads:

Handarbeit in West Germany
This is an especially desirable marking for collectors because it identifies the piece as a Christian Ulbricht wooden folk art creation from the West Germany era.
The soldier is beautifully detailed with a deep blue military uniform, red cuffs and collar, white trousers, black boots, tall black military helmet with decorative finisl and metallic trim, gray/brown beard and hair, painted facial features, and a curved saber held in his hand
The combination of the tall 17 inch scale, elaborate military costume and original Ulbricht makers mark gives this piece a wonderful presence as a Christmas display or German folk collectible.

Christian Holbrook is one of the best names associated with traditional German wooden nutcrackers.
The company’s roots go back to 1928, and this history includes the family postwar woodworking operation in West Germany before the company returned to his historic Seiffen roots after German reunification.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with wonderful original character.
The figure displayed beautifully. There is some minor age related wear to the painted surfaces, including areas of finish loss/wear on the helmet and other portions of the figure. The small imperfections are consistent with age and do not attract from its impressive overall appearance.
The original maker stamp on the underside is particularly noteworthy and is clearly photographed.
