Vintage cherry amber Bakelite faturan necklace of smooth, oval beads graduating from small at the back to large at the front, in a deep, glowing cherry red. The beads are strung with no clasp. The necklace is 33 inches long and weighs around 79 grams. The largest beads are about 1 1/2 inches long.
Cherry amber is the collector name for the translucent red-orange to reddish-brown Bakelite, an early phenolic plastic most popular in costume jewelry from the 1920s through the 1940s. Faturan is the name for this cast, glowing amber-like resin as made in Germany and carved into beads in Turkey. This necklace has been tested and is positive for genuine Bakelite: it turns a cloth yellow when rubbed with Simichrome polish, the standard dealer test.
