The Cheney Talking Machine Company produced elegant, premium phonographs in Chicago and Grand Rapids between 1916 and 1926. Rather than a single model, specific serials like "817" typically denote cabinet finishes or hardware variations rather than the distinct identifier. Cheney machines are notable for their handcrafted violin-wood horns and proprietary reproducers.
The Cheney 817 is a rare, spring-powered phonograph motor found in antique Cheney Talking Machines (manufactured in the 1910s and 1920s). Unlike standard pressed-steel models, Cheney motors are notable for using a distinct tubular, cast-aluminum spring barrel. The "817" typically refers to the specific patent date (August 17) often stamped on the reproducer cap, or a specific variant of their robust double/triple-spring motor configurations.
