Vintage Carl J. Martenson Hand-Carved Masonic Folk Art Shadow Box: $1995.00
Vintage Carl J. Martenson Hand-Carved Masonic Folk Art Shadow Box – Brooklyn, New YorkExceptional handmade Masonic folk-art shadow box attributed to Carl J. Martenson, a Brooklyn-based seaman, woodcarver, model maker and painter whose craftsmanship was documented in contemporary Seafarers Log publications. This elaborate dimensional work features numerous traditional Masonic symbols, including the Square and Compasses with the letter G, All-Seeing Eye, open book, trowel, stars, working tools and decorative foliage. The individually carved and applied elements are arranged over a painted background and enclosed within an unusually detailed geometric wooden frame. The reverse retains original handwritten maker information identifying C. Martenson of Brooklyn, New York, along with period contact/address information.Historical records document Carl J. Martenson as a longtime seaman and self-taught craftsman who worked in wood carving and oil painting, including works combining intricate carved elements with painted backgrounds. A 1967 contemporary profile also specifically mentions a framed shadow box by Martenson that was purchased by a Masonic Lodge in Illinois, making the subject and construction of this surviving piece particularly interesting.Brooklyn telephone-directory records independently document Carl J. Martenson at 465 46th Street, consistent with the information found on the reverse of this piece.CONDITION:The artwork and dimensional elements on the front present very well for their age. The carved/applied elements appear intact, with strong color and attractive overall presentation. There is normal age-related wear and some dust/debris visible beneath the glazing. The decorative wooden frame also shows expected age-related wear. Please examine the detailed photographs. The reverse backing board shows considerable age-related toning/discoloration, scattered staining, edge wear, old fastener/nail holes and areas of surface loss/chipping, particularly around the edges. These condition issues are on the reverse and do not detract from the frontal presentation of the artwork. The original handwritten maker information remains attached to the reverse and has intentionally been left untouched. No restoration or cleaning has been attempted. This is an unusual surviving example of Martenson's craftsmanship combining American folk art, Masonic imagery and New York maritime history. The photographs show the actual item you will receive and form part of the condition description.ATTRIBUTION:Attribution to Carl J. Martenson is based on the original maker information present on the piece together with corresponding historical records. The work has not been independently authenticated or professionally appraised.
