Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States was born into poverty in Kentucky in 1809. His father, Thomas Lincoln, was a farmer and carpenter who had great financial difficulties. Lincoln worked doing hard labor for all of his youth and through independent study lifted himself from his common fate by becoming an attorney. His entry into politics found him elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1834 and to the U.S. Congress as a member of the Whig Party in 1847. Joining the newly formed Republican Party in 1856, his failed run for the U.S. Senate in 1858 propelled him to national prominence setting him up for his successful run for the Presidency in 1860. Conflict over the morality and legality of slavery led in 1861 to the secession from the Union of 11 southern states and plunged the nation into bloody Civil War, which in turn led to Lincoln's issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 freeing the slaves. The North defeated the South and shortly after the conclusion of the conflagration Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, shot on April 14, 1865 and dying the next day. This bust was produced by Newell, a company founded in the 1930's to provide fine and accurate reproductions of classic sculptures for use in film and stage productions at nominal cost. Newell reproductions have become collectors pieces and this one is in beautiful condition.
