Up for sale is a beautiful, intact estate lot of 18 vintage and antique Valentine\'s Day greeting cards primarily dating from the 1910s to the 1930s. This is a true single-owner collection; the vast majority of these cards were sent to the same young girl, addressed on the back to Miss May from her childhood friends (including Lorna Choate, Alfreida, and Kathryn).
This lot features an exceptional variety of early 20th-century paper engineering, color lithography, and novelties:
- Mechanical & Pivot Cards: Includes a 1920s red airplane safety plane card with a moving parachute section on a metal rivet pin.
- 3D Pop-Up Shadowbox: A large, detailed German-style multi-layered card featuring children in a goat-driven carriage outside a house with built-in paper easel steps.
- Honeycomb Tissue Card: A folding card featuring a boy playing a violin that expands into a full 3D paper honeycomb base.
- German Lithography: Multiple high-quality embossed cards, including a running girl card carrying flowers explicitly stamped \"Made in Germany.\"
- Intricate Victorian/Edwardian Styles: Several cards displaying layered faux-lace borders, gilded accents, and embossed floral designs.
- Novelty Textures: Features a 1930s fishing card with a soft, fuzzy flocked fabric texture on the puppy dog.
Condition Report:
These cards are in remarkably good antique condition. The fronts show vibrant, bright graphics with minimal fading. The paper shows normal uniform aging and browning on the backs consistent with age, with clear, legible pencil and ink handwriting from the original senders.
