Barbola or Gesso, traditionally a paste made by mixing hide glue with clay and limestone to a moldable consistency, was used as an alternative to hand carved wood. It was lighter and less expensive.
This basket is finely woven and painted silver. It has grapes and leaves on either side of the woven twisted handle. As most barbola ornamented baskets, you will find some cracking to the hand work and faded paint. I don\'t see any missing pieces and it seems to be In decent overall condition.

About me:
I graduated with a Bachelor\'s in Interior Design in \'97. I worked in the field for 20 years successfully until having twins with medical issues. This necessitated my transition to a different kind of work and staying home with them. Recently, I have reignited my passion for design with my (mostly) vintage and antiques business. I\'m very small but I get to handle all aspects and make sure my customers are happy. I find it very fulfilling to find hidden treasures for others to enjoy! In a strange way, it keeps me in touch with my design roots and helps make a little money to participate in paying bills for my family. Thank you so much for looking and for your purchase, I really appreciate you!
