Luba Kifwebe Mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Luba masks are very similar to the Kifwebe masks used by the Songye people but have much rounder features.
Similar style masks can also be found in Ghana.
This mask has incredible detail and rich, dark patina.
The wood has been hollowed-out, with protruding eyes above the large nose which continues as a ridge on the forehead.
The crescent eyes and face are marked by curved bands in shallow relief.
Most Songye masks have a groove in the natural wood.
The mask measures 9 1/2" in height and 8" in width.
It shows minor wear appropriate for its age and actual use.
