A Federal Airways Flight Check DC-3, Register ListedDESCRIPTIONThis is an original vintage color photograph of Douglas DC-3 N34, shown in flight wearing its gray, white, and orange "Federal Airways" Flight Inspection livery, with a bold lightning bolt stripe running the length of the fuselage and the words "FEDERAL AIRWAYS" and "FLIGHT INSPECTION" lettered above and below the stripe. N34 has one of the most unusual service records of any surviving DC-3. Built in May 1945 by Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City for the U.S. Navy, the aircraft spent its first decade flying Navy transport missions worldwide before moving into civilian government service in the late 1950s with the Civil Aeronautics Administration, the direct predecessor of today's FAA. From there N34 spent over two decades checking and calibrating the navigation aids that kept the nation's airways safe, ultimately serving as the FAA's main flight inspection training aircraft, and became the very last DC-3 retired from that role in 1981 when King Air aircraft took over the job. Retirement wasn't the end of its story: the FAA kept N34 flying as a promotional "ambassador" aircraft for airshows, gave it a full nose-to-tail restoration in 2002 for the Wright Brothers Centennial, and flew it again for the agency's 50th anniversary in 2008 and 2009. Its final flight came in February 2014, when N34 was flown to its permanent home at the Texas Air and Space Museum in Amarillo, Texas, under a donation agreement stating it would never fly again. N34 was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 29, 1997, making it one of a small number of individual aircraft, and one of only a couple of "moving objects," ever to receive that designation.
