Pair of original vintage glass ashtrays from the golden age of Hollywood dining and hospitality, circa 1950s–early 1960s.
The first ashtray is marked “Schine Hotels – Finest Under The Sun.” The Schine hotel group operated the famed Ambassador Hotel (3400 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles), one of Hollywood’s most important social and entertainment hubs during the mid-20th century. The Ambassador was widely known for hosting film premieres, industry events, and major performers. Documented figures associated with the hotel include Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, and Barbra Streisand among many others connected to its nightclub and hotel scene.
The second ashtray is from Har-Omar, 8795 Sunset Blvd, Sunset Strip – Finest Continental Cuisine, an Armenian restaurant operating along the Sunset Strip during its peak nightlife years. Contemporary accounts and period references associate Har-Omar with a celebrity clientele that included Lana Turner, Mickey Rooney, Red Skelton, Hoagy Carmichael, Linda Darnell, Elia Kazan, and Dana Andrews.
The Sunset Strip in this era was a central gathering place for film stars, musicians, and industry figures, making this piece a direct artifact of that environment.Together, these ashtrays represent two distinct but connected parts of mid-century Hollywood culture: the formal glamour of the Ambassador Hotel and the vibrant restaurant scene of the Sunset Strip.
