Vintage 1987 Sapporo Hokkaido Bear Salmon Enju Wood Hand Carved Wall Art Japan For Sale

Description

🌸 DescriptionAn impressive large vintage hand-carved bear and salmon wall sculpture from Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan.Created in 1987, this substantial piece measures 50 cm / 19.69 in high and weighs 3 kg / 6.61 lb.Unlike a conventional freestanding Hokkaido bear figure, this piece was designed specifically for wall display and presents the bear and salmon together in a dramatic three-dimensional composition. The bear grips the salmon firmly, while the fish curves upward with its tail raised, creating a strong sense of movement and tension. The bear's fur is rendered with dense, flowing carving, while the salmon is treated with a completely different surface texture using carefully carved scales and fins. The claws appear to press deeply into the salmon, adding further three-dimensional realism to the scene. The sculpture is made from Enju wood, with natural variations in the heartwood and sapwood contributing to the contrast between the darker bear and lighter areas of the salmon. The reverse has been substantially hollowed to reduce excess weight and help manage natural wood movement. The hollowed surface retains attractive repeated rounded chisel marks that clearly show the hand-carved construction. The reverse bears the inscription:SapporoSeptember 6, 1987⚙️ FeaturesHand-carved Enju wood construction, large 50 cm size, dramatic bear-and-salmon composition, detailed fur carving, individually carved salmon scales, deeply modeled claws, three-dimensional wall-mounted format, hollowed hand-chiseled reverse, dated Sapporo inscription, and vintage Hokkaido folk-art character.📏 Size & MeasurementsHeight:50 cm / 500 mm / 19.69 inWidth:40 cm / 400 mm / 15.75 inDepth:30 cm / 300 mm / 11.81 inWeight:3 kg / 3000 g / 6.61 lbMaterial:Enju WoodMotif:Bear with SalmonTechnique:Hand Carved / Hair Carving / Scale Carving / Relief CarvingReverse:Hollowed and Hand ChiseledDate:September 6, 1987Inscription:Sapporo / 1987Origin:Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan🧾 ConditionVintage pre-owned condition. No major cracks or significant damage have been described. There are minor surface scuffs, signs of age, previous display, and natural variations associated with the wood. Please carefully review all photos for the exact condition.📦 Included1 × Vintage Hokkaido Hand-Carved Bear and Salmon Wall SculptureOnly the item shown is included.🏮 NotesThe reverse bears a Sapporo inscription and the date September 6, 1987.This piece was purchased from a traditional craft shop in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1987.Its unusually large wall-mounted format and detailed bear-and-salmon composition make it particularly suitable for collectors of Hokkaido folk art, Japanese wood carving, vintage bear sculptures, Showa-era crafts, Mingei-style art, and rustic Japanese decorative art.
