Vintage 1984 Inuit Soapstone Carving Hunter Seal Thomasie Joanassie Jack Signed:
$449.00

Authentic Vintage 1984 Inuit Soapstone Carving – Hunter with Seal
Artist: Thomasie Joanassie Jack (born 1954)
Community/Origin: Puvirnituq (Povungnituk), Nunavik, Northern Quebec, Canada
Year of Creation: 1984Authentic piece of Canadian Indigenous folk art. This hand-carved sculpture depicts a traditional Inuit hunter holding a harvested seal carcass with both hands in front of him. The piece beautifully captures the unembellished, narrative style characteristic of the historic Puvirnituq carving cooperative.Signature & Provenance:
The underside of the base is heavily documented and clearly incised with:
  • The artist’s native name written in traditional Inuit syllabics: ᑐᒪᓯ Ꮷᓇᓯ (Thomasie Joanassie)
  • The artist’s initials: DF
  • A unique community inventory/registry number: 15817
  • The official copyright year symbol and date: © 84
Material & Texture:
This piece is carved from a traditional, classic dark grey/black soapstone (steatite). True to high-grade historic soapstone, it has a very soft composition (scratches under fingernail pressure) and showcases beautiful natural variations in the stone texturing.Dimensions & Weight:
  • Height: Approximately 4 inches (10.16 cm)
  • Weight: 7.7 ounces (approx. 218 grams)
  • A dense, solid, and wonderfully tactile cabinet-sized display piece.
Condition:
The sculpture is in good vintage condition overall, with beautiful preservation of the facial features, linear garment etchings, and base signatures. As is common with soft, traditional soapstone of this age, there are visible surface scuffs and white impact abrasions located on the back of the figure's hood and shoulder (please see macro close-up photos for exact details). The base is flat and the piece stands securely on its own.
Please refer to pictures for additional condition details. Let me know if you have any questions.
