DESCRIPTION:Vintage 1980s textile wall hanging depicting the African continent with country and regional names printed primarily in French. This piece was acquired in Africa during a travel industry familiarization ("FAM") tour taken by a Chicago-area travel agent during the 1980s and remained in a private collection for decades thereafter. While the exact country of purchase is unknown, the textile was acquired in Africa during a multi-country itinerary. The textile measures approximately 17" x 17" and features a stylized map of Africa surrounded by a geometric border and African-inspired decorative motifs, including a stylized mask and village imagery. Country and regional names appear in French and include references such as Zimbabwe and Sud-Ouest Africain (South West Africa), creating an interesting snapshot of African political geography from the era.The piece appears to combine woven textile construction with printed decoration. The top and bottom edges feature intentionally frayed decorative finishing as part of the original design. An artist's signature or maker's mark appears in the lower right corner but is not fully legible.A unique decorative textile for collectors of African art, travel memorabilia, geography, cartography, folk art, and international cultural décor.
CONDITION:***SEE PHOTOS*** Vintage condition with visible age and wear consistent with decades of storage, handling, and display. The textile remains structurally sound with no tears, holes, or repairs noted. Colors remain visible throughout, though fading, discoloration, and general wear are present. Some color migration or bleeding is visible in portions of the decorative imagery, particularly around the mask motif. The intentionally frayed upper and lower edges appear original to the design, while additional edge wear, loose fibers, and fraying are consistent with age and handling. The fabric remains soft and pliable. No noticeable smoke, pet, mildew, or other objectionable odors detected. From a smoke-free and pet-free home. Overall, an attractive vintage African textile displaying authentic age, character, and patina.HISTORICAL & CULTURAL BACKGROUND:During the mid-to-late twentieth century, decorative map textiles became popular souvenirs, educational pieces, and wall décor throughout Africa and abroad. Many combined geography with traditional artistic motifs, creating works that functioned both as decorative art and as visual representations of the continent. The French-language place names reflect the influence of French colonial history and the continued use of French throughout many African nations. Such pieces were often purchased by travelers, educators, and collectors interested in African geography, culture, and history. The imagery seen here, including geometric borders, stylized masks, and village scenes, reflects artistic themes commonly associated with African folk art and tourist-market textiles of the period. The map's inclusion of historical place names and political boundaries provides an interesting glimpse into Africa as represented during the late twentieth century.Because this textile depicts the entire African continent rather than a single nation, it serves as both decorative artwork and a period piece reflecting historical geography and international travel culture.
