Vintage 1975 Abashiri Hokkaido Bear Mask Enju Wood Hand Carved Folk Art Japan For Sale

Description

🌸 DescriptionA vintage hand-carved wooden bear head wall sculpture from Hokkaido, Japan. This distinctive piece was purchased in Abashiri, Hokkaido in January 1975 and features a powerful faceted carving style that leaves bold chisel marks visible across the bear's face.Unlike finely incised fur carving, the surface is modeled through larger angular cuts, creating a strong geometric appearance and emphasizing the sculptural form of the forehead, muzzle, cheeks, and ears. The piece is made from Hokkaido Enju wood and displays attractive natural variations in grain and tone, ranging from lighter honey-colored areas to deeper brown sections. The reverse has been deeply hollowed, reducing weight while retaining the substantial three-dimensional form of the front.A distinctive radial pattern of chisel marks is also visible inside the hollowed reverse, showing careful workmanship even on areas normally hidden from view. The reverse bears an inscription recording:“Abashiri”“January 1975”This provides clear provenance for the piece.⚙️ FeaturesHokkaido Enju wood, hand-carved construction, faceted Menbori / Hatsuri-style chisel work, hollowed reverse, decorative radial chisel pattern, natural contrasting wood grain, dated Abashiri provenance, wall-hanging design, vintage Showa-era character, and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.📏 Size & MeasurementsHeight:30 cm / 11.81 inWidth:30 cm / 11.81 inDepth:13 cm / 5.12 inWeight:1.1 kg / 2.43 lbMaterial:Hokkaido Enju WoodMotif:Bear HeadTechnique:Hand Carved / Faceted Chisel CarvingOrigin:Hokkaido, JapanPurchase Location:Abashiri, HokkaidoPurchase Date:January 1975🧾 ConditionVintage pre-owned condition. There are age-related scratches, surface wear, minor marks, and other signs of long-term display and storage. Please carefully review all photos, including the reverse inscription and hollowed carving, for the exact cosmetic condition.📦 Included1 × Vintage Hokkaido Hand-Carved Bear Head Wall SculptureOnly the item shown is included.🏮 NotesThe reverse bears an inscription recording Abashiri and January 1975.Suitable for collectors of Hokkaido folk art, Japanese Mingei, vintage bear carvings, Enju woodcraft, Showa-era crafts, rustic interiors, and traditional Japanese decorative art.
