Candlestick telephones date back to the earliest days of the telephone, and in the 1970s Deco-Tel (American Telecommunications Corp. of El Monte, California) brought the shape back in bold decorator styles. This Stars & Stripes version dresses it in patriotic Americana, with a blue star-covered base and earpiece, a red-and-cream striped stem and a brass-tone rotary dial. Collectors of vintage telephones, patriotic decor and 1970s kitsch look for these, and it makes a cheerful display on a shelf, desk or mantel.
The Deco-Tel label reads Model 144005 A102, with 'Made in U.S.A.' and 'Telephone Co. Property' molded into the base. Plastic body and handset with a brass-tone dial, collar and fittings. Complete with base, stem, hanging receiver (earpiece), handset and coiled cord; weighs about 2.4 lb.
Condition: Used, with wear that fits its age: a small paint chip on the cream stripe of the stem, light scratches, tarnish on the brass-tone dial and a spotted, discolored paper dial card (still readable). The coiled cord is discolored and appears cracked near the top of the handset. Sold untested; the line cord ends in bare wire with no plug, so it needs a modular plug or hard-wiring before use. It is a fine display piece as is - see photos.
