A vintage English pottery tankard made by Ellgreave Pottery of Staffordshire under its “Genuine Heatmaster” line. One side shows a vivid heraldic image of a mounted medieval knight in full armor, wearing a swan-crested helm and riding a horse in red and gold caparison. The other side carries a printed biography of Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick (1345–1401). He was one of the primary opponents of Richard II, and was later imprisoned in the Tower of London in what is now known as the “Beauchamp Tower.”
The base carries the Ellgreave Heatmaster crown backstamp with the code “8-69.” Ellgreave Heatmaster pieces use this kind of code as a production date, so a mark like 5-69 means May 1969. Yours therefore dates to August 1969. It would suit collectors of medieval and heraldic décor, English pottery, or British history.
