Vintage 1963 Wajima Nuri Chinkin Lacquer Fish Panel on Wood Backing
Measurements:
Overall (including wood backing): Approx. 11" x 11"
Inner Lacquer Panel: Approx. 6" x 6"
Materials & Technique:
Black lacquer panel mounted to a natural wood backing.
Features a mixed-media fish motif utilizing the Chinkin technique (sunken gold and foil inlay over carved lacquer).
Marks & Provenance:
Front: Features a red artist seal (inshō) in traditional seal script belonging to the specific association member who crafted the panel.
Reverse Wood Backing: Stamped with Japanese text indicating this was a 10th-anniversary commemorative piece for the Kagoshima Prefecture Fishery Credit Fund Association, dated May 1963 (Showa 38). Includes a silver foil label designating it as "Special Selection Wajima Lacquerware".
Reverse Paper Slip: An affixed informational slip details the history of Wajima lacquerware and the Chinkin carving technique. The text explicitly references the master of the Chinkin technique, Living National Treasure Mae Taihō, and notes that this specific panel was produced by members of the Wajima Craftsman Association.
