Vintage 1960s Penguin Liquor Decanter Music Box How Dry I Am Japan MCM Barware For Sale

This whimsical mid-century penguin liquor decanter doubles as a wind-up music box, playing the appropriately boozy tune “How Dry I Am.”Made in Japan circa the late 1950s/early 1960s, the penguin combines a clear patterned glass body with black and silver-tone metal/plastic details. His removable head cleverly serves as the decanter stopper, while the wind-up music mechanism is concealed underneath.Wind the mechanism and the music is designed to play when the penguin is lifted to pour a drink, stopping again when it is placed back down.The underside retains its JAPAN marking and original “How Dry I Am” paper tune label.The clear glass body has a wonderful abstract crackle/web-like decorative pattern that gives the piece even more character. Chrome/silver-tone wings, feet, collar and pointed beak complete the wonderfully streamlined penguin design.These novelty musical decanters were part of the golden age of mid-century home entertaining, and an example of this penguin design is held in the City of Waterloo Museum collection, which dates it to around 1960.
