Up for sale is a captivating piece of original World War II maritime folk art, hand-painted in oil on board, signed by the artist P. Walker, and dated \'42 (1942).
Historical Significance:
This original painting features the American Gleaves-class destroyer USS Beatty, clearly identified by her hull number \"640\" painted on the bow. The artist\'s 1942 date places this painting exactly during the most pivotal year of the ship\'s brief combat history. The USS Beatty was officially commissioned into the US Navy on May 7, 1942. She immediately joined the Atlantic theater, running perilous convoy escort missions and participating in Operation Torch (the Allied invasion of French North Africa) later that November. Tragically, she was struck by a German aerial torpedo and sunk off the coast of Algeria in November 1943. Because her active service lifespan was only 18 months, original wartime depictions of this specific vessel are incredibly scarce.
This piece showcases classic wartime folk art characteristics. It captures the raw power of the destroyer slicing through heavy, ridge-like green waves, throwing up dramatic white foam at the bow. Thick, dark smoke billows from her dual funnels, and maritime signal flags fly proudly from the central mast. The textured oil paints bring a fantastic depth and historical soul to the piece that modern prints simply cannot replicate.
This is a phenomenal, genuine relic of American home front or shipboard military history. It is a fantastic investment piece for any collector of WWII militaria, naval history, or authentic 20th-century Americana folk art.
It is a little darker the photos with light on it.
