Original Vintage 1940s Melrose Restaurant Menu Commodore Continental Hotel Washington DC
The Melrose Restaurant operated inside Washington\'s Hotel Commodore, the Georgian Revival building completed in spring 1927 at North Capitol and F Streets NW, a short walk from Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. Restaurateur Jack Melrose ran the hotel\'s dining room, advertising full dinners for one dollar in 1944, and also managed the Commodore\'s Cork and Bottle cocktail lounge, which he told the Washington Post in 1937 was \'just crowded to the gills.\' The Commodore catered to rail travelers and Capitol Hill trade but declined after World War II as air travel supplanted the railroads. The building operates today as the Phoenix Park Hotel, home of the Dubliner, but the Melrose Restaurant is long gone.
