Vintage 1940s–1950s metal wall-mounted match holder manufactured by Calendar Manufacturing Company of Wichita, Kansas. Finished in a charming pale buttercream yellow, this utilitarian kitchen piece has a wonderful mid-century farmhouse look.
The upper compartment was designed for storing long wooden kitchen or stove matches within easy reach of the range, while the lower hinged compartment served as a receptacle for used matches. A mounting hole at the top allows the holder to be hung directly on the wall.
The piece retains its aged butter-yellow painted finish with visible surface wear, paint loss, discoloration, scratches, and areas of oxidation consistent with decades of use. I actually wouldn’t clean or repaint it—the naturally worn finish gives it a great authentic vintage character.
A neat piece of Kansas-made kitchen history and an excellent addition to a vintage kitchen, farmhouse, primitive, or mid-century utility collection.
