An unusually simple early design featuring “AHWAHNEE” and “YOSEMITE” in dark green against a salmon-colored field, with a stylized central emblem. The reverse is completely unprinted. Original black striker is present and the matchbook retains a substantial number of its original green-tipped matches.
The Ahwahnee is one of America\'s great historic national-park hotels. Conceived under Stephen T. Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, and designed by noted architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, the hotel formally opened in Yosemite Valley in July 1927. Its distinctive architecture combines rustic, Arts & Crafts and Art Deco influences, and the building was constructed largely of steel, granite and concrete — including concrete surfaces specially treated to resemble wood. The Ahwahnee was later designated a National Historic Landmark.
The hotel\'s history took a remarkable turn during World War II. In 1943 the U.S. Navy leased the entire property and converted it into the U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital, later the U.S. Naval Special Hospital. Nearly 7,000 Navy personnel were treated there before the facility was decommissioned in December 1945. After extensive restoration, the Ahwahnee reopened to civilian guests in December 1946.
The very spare graphics and absence of later-style address, telephone or promotional information suggest an early period of production. I have not found sufficient documentation to assign an exact year, so it is conservatively offered as c. 1930s–1940s.
Original vintage condition with age-related edge wear, handling marks and creasing as shown. Several matches are missing, but a substantial number of original green-tipped matches remain. Please review photographs carefully for exact condition.
