HISTORICAL NOTE.

The following sentences from an editorial in the Negro Daily Record, of Wilmington, N. C., published August 18, 1898, caused the revolution on which the action of this play is based.

\"We suggest that the Whites guard their women more closely. \"You leave your goods out of doors and then complain because they are taken away. Poor white men are careless in the matter of protecting their wo men, especially on the farms. And our experience in the country teaches us that the women of that race are not any more particular in the matter of clandestine meetings with colored men than are the white men with colored women.\"

Scene: Arlington, on the coast of North Carolina.
