Vintage barrel that originally contained 150 pounds of Reed, Murdoch and Company breakfast coffee. The barrel is made of wood with a dark gold colored cardboard covering on the outside. It is massive - the dimensions are below, but please see picture ___ with a 12 ounce can of soda for scale.
The lid is hinged and on the underside, there is a red paper label with an amazing picture of the Reed Murdoch building, which still stands today in downtown Chicago. The detail is incredible - on the left, Lasalle St. is labeled, with trucks in front of what looks like a loading area. In the front, the picture shows the Chicago River, with stairs up to Clark St. on the right.
On the top of the lid, the barrel has \"A.H. Wilson Wildwood, Wis.\". Wildwood is in eastern Wisconsin and is now an unincorporated community with no buildings I could make out in satellite images on Google. However, there is a shadow visible where a rail line came to the town, so perhaps Mr. Wilson ordered this barrel from Chicago for a general store in Wildwood?
The barrel has wear and minor damage on the outside, and the lid has been repaired; however, overall, I think it looks outstanding, and it is very clean inside and out, even at the bottom.
The barrel measures 22 inches across and 33 1/2 inches inches tall (the top is slightly irregular so some areas are about 33 3/4 inches).
Please see pictures for condition. Note that there are scratches, scuffs, tears and staining on the outside, and there is a green stain over the word \"Murdoch\". One of the hinges has been repaired and the original nails have been replaced by two screws. The paper label on the underside of the lid has wrinkles, tears, and staining.
Due to the size of the box, shipping is expensive, even via UPS. I am happy to coordinate local pickup to save on shipping if you are able, I am in Minneapolis, close to the Dowling Ave. exit off of highway 94.
