Antique New York National Guard Marksman Qualification Medal – 1888-1892
Offered here is an attractive late-19th-century New York National Guard marksmanship award badge featuring five consecutive dated “MARKSMAN” qualification bars.
The bars are dated:
1888 – 1889 – 1890 – 1891 – 1892
The five bars are individually linked together and suspend a round medal featuring a detailed mountain, rising sun and water scene. The reverse of the medal is lettered:
“NATIONAL GUARD STATE OF NEW YORK”
The upper bar retains its original-style pin and catch assembly. Several of the bars also bear a small maker’s mark on the reverse.
An especially interesting piece because the five consecutive bars document five years of marksmanship qualification during the 1880s and 1890s. This would make an excellent addition to a collection of New York National Guard, American militia, shooting award, firearms, or late-19th-century military memorabilia.
Condition:
Good antique condition considering its approximately 130+ years of age. The badge displays age-related toning, oxidation/patina, surface wear and areas of finish loss. The individual bars and connecting links appear intact. The pin and catch remain present. No attempt has been made to polish or clean the piece. Please examine all photographs closely, as they are an important part of the condition description.
Guaranteed to be the exact item shown in the photographs.
