THE STORY BEHIND THIS PLAQUE
When Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, his older brother Roy postponed his own retirement to finish Walt's Florida project — wrestling swampland, construction delays, and $400 million in financing so it would open owing nothing to outside creditors.
Roy fought one more battle: the marketing team wanted to call it "Disneyworld." Roy overruled them — it would be called WALT Disney World, so every guest would know whose dream they were walking through.
On Monday, October 25, 1971 at 2 PM, with Mickey Mouse at his side at the Main Street flagpole, Roy read aloud the very words cast into this plaque. It was his final act. Roy O. Disney died on December 20, 1971 — less than two months later.
Sunday, October 25, 2026, marks the 55th anniversary of that dedication.
