Up for sale is a fine and early iteration of the Stanley No. 16 block plane. The No. 16 is equivalent to the No. 9 1/2, with nickel plated trim instead of japanning on the lever cap. I believe it dates to the earliest years that the No. 16 was offered by Stanley, which was between 1888 and 1892. No guarantee, but that appears to be correct approximate age based on availabile data.
Features:
- Early "Excelsior" body with hump towards rear of plane
- Exact body measurements: 6 5/16" long x 1 7/8" wide
- No "handi-grip" milling on cheeks
- Early domed lever cap with rear protruding lever with upturned tab. No patent markings.
- Traces of nickel plating on the stippled top, edges, and bottom of cap.
- Manually adjusted throat (predates eccentric lever)
- short front knob boss
- Tall flared profile brass knob
- Right hand threads on cutter depth screw
- 1 5/8" width 4 5/16" length cutter with type J trademark (1874 - 1909)
- Weighs 1lb, 5oz.
Condition: Excellent. Original japanning is at least 90% intact. Teeth on the cutter depth adjuster are sharp and fully intact. Body casting and mouth are perfect. Free of chips, cracks, or other damage. The earlier body castings were thinner than those that came later. The cap has one tiny chip on the right edge smaller than a pencil eraser. Most of the nickel plating is gone, but traces are definitely present throughout. A nice one for the shelf.
