• SCOTLAND
• FRANCEThe main body features:• BELGIUM

Vintage condition with a gorgeous, authentic patina. The hinge needs a repair (solder?), but remains stable, and the lid snaps shut tightly. Minor surface wear and pocket scuffs present, which add incredible character and historical depth to this piece. Sold as-is as a historical collectible.Display Style: Display open in a felt-lined shadow box or a pocket-knife/lighter showcase rack to protect the chrome finish from scratches while highlighting the unique custom engravings.Care Instructions:
To maintain the historical value and patina, it is recommended that you do not polish the metal casing with abrasive chemical cleaners. Wipe down occasionally with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. If intending to make it functional, replace the flint and wick using official brand parts, and store empty of lighter fluid if kept purely as a display piece.Age and Country of Origin: The core lighter body is manufactured by Zippo in Bradford, Pennsylvania, USA. Based on the style of the case and personalization format, it is a piece of post-WWII military/traveler "trench art" or a souvenir piece likely dating from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. This aligns with a serviceman's deployment or journey through Western Europe. A little research - please don't hold me to it, let it spark some interest but conduct your own - and I found interest in the following:From the internet (let this start your research, but please don't rely on it in its entirety):
This lighter is a classic piece of World War II military trench art, and it would have been carried by an Allied service member (most likely an American, British, or Canadian soldier) who participated in the liberation of Western Europe between 1944 and 1945.
The specific sequence of countries engraved on the lighter perfectly traces the historic path of the Allied advance following the D-Day invasions:
🗺️ The Deployment Route
England & Scotland: Troops staged, trained, and embarked from ports across Great Britain before the invasion.
France: The user landed here during or shortly after the Normandy Campaign (Summer 1944).
Belgium & Luxemburg: The route moves through the Low Countries during the autumn and winter push, fighting through major actions like the Battle of the Bulge.
Germany: The final push into Nazi Germany in early 1945.
Switzerland: As a neutral country during WWII, Switzerland was a highly popular R&R (Rest and Recuperation) destination for Allied soldiers immediately after the war ended in Europe (1945).
🪖 Who was "L.W.G."? The initials L.W.G. at the bottom belong to the individual soldier who either hand-engraved the lighter themselves in the field or paid a local European craftsman to engrave it as a personalized souvenir of their deployment.
While it's difficult to pinpoint the exact division without a service number, the itinerary is exceptionally characteristic of a soldier in the U.S. Army (such as the 3rd Army or 9th Army) or the British 21st Army Group, both of which fought directly through this exact sequence of nations.Items are in gently used condition and we do our best to detect and describe flaws, but we are likely going to miss some. Please enlarge photos and ask if you have any questions or would like additional descriptions. Thanks
