VTG 50’s Wigwam 100% Heavy Wool Letterman Award Cardigan Blue "C" Patch “Gibson”:
$79.99

The Vintage Wigwam 100% Wool Letterman Button Front Cardigan in Navy Blue is a classic piece of women's vintage clothing. Made with high-quality wool, this knit cardigan features a distinctive "C" patch on the front, adding a unique touch to the Letterman look. The button front design and regular fit make it a versatile and stylish addition to any vintage wardrobe, perfect for pairing with jeans or a classic button-up shirt for a timeless look. The name Gail Gibson is embroidered inside on the bottom right hand corner. The label states the size is a 32. When the garment is laid flat, armpit to armpit measures about 16” and from the shoulder near the collar to the bottom is about 23.5”. There is a metal basketball on the chenille “C”.
Here’s what a Google search revealed:• The Manufacturer: The tag reads "Award Sweater by Wigwam - Hand Knit Hosiery Co., Sheboygan, Wis."
• The Era: This specific tag dates the sweater between the late 1930s and 1950s. While the famous sock company Wigwam Socks was originally founded in 1905 as the Hand Knit Hosiery Co., they didn't fully change their corporate name to Wigwam Mills Inc. until 1957.
• The Material: The font style, the illustration of the teepee/wigwam, and the 100% Wool text are classic markers of mid-century American athletic knitwear.✍️ The Name Patch• The Owner: The lower embroidered name tag reads "Gail Gibson" in a elegant chain-stitched cursive script.
• The Significance: Varsity or "award" sweaters of this era were significant investments and highly personalized. Having the student's name stitched into the hem or interior lining was common practice to ensure it didn't get lost or swapped at school sports events and rallies. It is in excellent condition, but would imagine it would need dry cleaning after being in storage. There are no moth holes or rips on this sweater. An excellent piece of mid-century Americana varsity! Please ask all questions in advance as I do not accept returns
