Up for sale is a stunning, beautifully preserved half-gallon clear glass wine bottle from the iconic Garrett & Company, Inc.
This specific piece is a collector's dream, boasting the rarest large-format size (1/2 Gallon), an incredibly crisp embossed shoulder crest, and the highly coveted original metal closure cap.
Produced following the repeal of Prohibition, this bottle is a premier example of mid-century American glasswork and New York winery advertising history.
Exquisite Front Embossing Details:
The front shoulder features a remarkably crisp, high-relief emblem showcasing the deep history of Garrett's heritage:
The Crest:
A detailed American Eagle with outspread wings perched atop a heraldic shield. Inside the shield is a prominent cluster of grapes over an open book, flanked by two miniature wine bottles.
The Text:
The shield is flanked by the arched name "GARRETT’S" above the grapes, with a beautifully curved ribbon banner below reading "AMERICAN WINES".
The Base Text: Boldly embossed further down with "GARRETT & CO. ESTABLISHED 1835" and the regional location "NEW YORK" at the lower base.
Verified Base Markings & Historical Provenance:
Design Patent: Clearly embossed around the top rim with "DES. PAT. NO. 101182". This design patent was filed by Garrett & Co. on August 4, 1936, strictly dating the production of this bottle from 1936 to the mid-1940s.
Manufacturer Logo: Features the distinct, authentic geometric "TMC" monogram logo stamped in the center, verifying it was molded by the legendary Thatcher Glass Manufacturing Company (used between 1923–1954).
Production Codes: Crisply embossed with quality-control mold tracking numbers "1044", "E", and "2-A".
Federal Law Warning: Embossed on the side heel with the post-Prohibition mandate: "REFILLING PROHIBITED BY LAW".
Condition Report:
Glass: Outstanding vintage condition. The glass is clear with a slight amethyst hue and bright with highly pronounced, sharp embossing that catches the light beautifully. No chips, cracks, or heavy exterior scuffing.
Interior: The interior has been carefully cleaned , leaving it in beautiful display-ready condition.
Cap: Includes the original, highly desirable continuous-thread metal screw cap. The top of the lid retains its original lithograph design, reading "Garrett & Company, Inc. Since 1835. Makers of Virginia Dare and Other Fine Wines." The cap shows wonderful, authentic age-appropriate patina and light oxidation on the rim, but remains structurally sound with its internal pulpboard liner fully intact.
