VINTAGE PAPIER-MACHE HALLOWEEN JACK-O-LANTERN CHOIR BOY PAIL, 7”, 1930s For Sale

DESCRIPTION:

This isthe papier-mache jack-o-lantern pail commonly known as ‘choir boy’ because ofthe joyous shape of the mouth, as if belting out the high notes that will sendbats out of the church belfry to invade the dark city. It has green on its base, dark archedeyebrows, with the rest in orange. This measures 8” side-to-side, 7” deep frontto back, and 7” tall, which I understand is the largest size made back then. There is a wire inserted in the sides of the rim for carrying. The bottom is impressed upward enough that Isuppose it could keep a wide candle in place, but the interior is clean, asthough never used (or only for collecting treats) – one photo here shows it asbest I could peering in from the top.See the photo of the bottom – I was stunned to find its original priceof 43 cents (!) stamped into the surface from the 1930s-1940s Louisianafive-and-dime store where this was sold.

CONDITION:

This is ingood condition overall. See the photos -I show here whatever dings I could find in its surface, some around the openings.
