VINTAGE MEXICAN DECORATIVE TIGRE / JAGUAR MASKA ferocious jaguar with an open mouth, sharp teeth and a red tongue. His red eyes are wild and ferocious. His orange-brown face comes to life with accents of black,, blue, white and red.

Made as a decorative mask but could be worn on the head with vision available through the open mouth.
The uses of these masks were varied but always connected to ceremony and ritual, especially in theatrical dance and processions. High priests used masks to incarnate deities. Jaguar and eagle warriors dressed themselves like these animals in order to gain their strengths. The Maya also connected the magnificent feline\'s abilities with various natural phenomena, believing that the jaguar\'s ability to see at night enabled it to move between worlds. Jaguars also became a universal symbol of political and military power which gave rulers a protective animal spirit.
